FRESH~ONE by GRATER

Wait for it… >> Thats right! Graffiti’s latest TRENDY Connection.

By Sirum One, July 14, 2010 8:58 pm

Fads often come and go… Graffiti is no exception when it comes to latest trends!

I myself am happy to admit I have leaned toward the good old bandwagon in

times gone bye. Some people loath trends whilst others will tell you they are

a healthy part of the ( lets say graffiti ) learning process..

Well, what ever the opinion? I myself have found this latest graffiti connection

rather amusing to say the least !

It goes like this > Drop the first letter ( or two ;) ) of your piece. I believe it also

helps if you do it in a fashionable style! You then create a RANDOM spaghetti connector

coming from some RANDOM part of the first letter of your piece and pull it, well

as far along as you want really?  Across the wall ( lets say a couple of metres ) and

simply connect it to the rest of your letters!

A little information on the creation of this special mural and print release from Myla:

“We all spoke about doing a collaboration character wall and when you guys offered up your new studio for a spot for us to paint it, we went there with a loose idea of how we wanted the wall to feel and how we will lay it out. We started painting in the morning and kept going till we all felt that it was finished…each of us adding bits and pieces till it was done. We were all so happy with how the wall came out we sat down to work on making a print of it!” – Myla

Artist information:

Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins:
Greg Simkins was born in 1975 in Torrance California, just south of Los Angeles. He grew up with a menagerie of animals including a number of rabbits, which often emerge in his paintings.  He began drawing at the early age of three and was inspired by various cartoons and books. Some standout books that still find their way into his art are Watership Down by Richard Adams, The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis and The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster.

Simkins’ art continued to progress to the age of 18, when he started doing graffiti under the name “CRAOLA”. Graffiti art became his impetus for creating and gave him the confidence to paint large works.  In addition it taught him perspective, color theory and further developed artistic skills, which later translated into his work with acrylics.

After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art from California State University of Long Beach in 1999, Simkins worked as an Illustrator for various clothing companies.  He later moved on to Treyarch/Activision where he worked on video games including Tony Hawk 2X, Spiderman 2 and Ultimate Spiderman while attempting to paint with every free moment he had.

In 2005, Simkins pursued his desire to paint as a full time artist. Since then, he has been featured in numerous group exhibitions has had successfully sold out solo exhibitions.  His art is seen in a wide variety of industries from clothing to video games and has also come to life in the form of toys. His client/collaboration list includes Disney, Mattel, Upper Playground, Juxtapoz, To Die For, Vans, Converse, AFI, Saosin, Gym Class Heroes, Pennywise, STRANGEco, Ningyoushi, Kid Robot, Zero Friends, Epitaph, Dark Horse, Iron Fist and Pulse International.

It is his careful weaving of pop culture, the old masters, nature, carnival kitsch, and (most importantly) his warped imagination, that makes Greg Simkins a sought-after surrealist painter today. Simkins’ artwork currently appears in galleries throughout the world.

Dabs Myla:
Dabs is a prolific illustrator and graffiti artist who spent his teenage years growing up in Melbourne in the early ‘90s. The graffiti scene influenced him greatly in his style and technique. These days Dabs’ characters come to life in more contextualized environments than ever before, whether they are painted on walls in the streets, or on canvases for a gallery setting. Myla also grew up in Melbourne where she was obsessed with detailed painting and drawing from an early age. Throughout her life Myla has continued to develop her style, concentrating on detailed cities, landscapes and graffiti. Three years ago, along with Dabs, they combined forces to solely collaborate on their works together.

Dabs Myla currently live in Hollywood, Los Angeles, spending everyday working on artworks, painting walls and being influenced by the wonders of their new city.

Jersey Joe (aka Rime):

Born, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in Staten Island. Moved to New Jersey in 1996. Relocated to Los Angeles in 2005.

Known for versatile, adventurous letter-style, Rime (Jersey Joe) combines vivid colors, precise lines, and bold concepts to produce work that stands in a class of its own.  Simply put, Rime’s work has character.

A natural artist, Joe began painting graffiti during 1991 in Staten Island, and spent the next years developing his talent in different areas of New York City and New Jersey.  By 2003, Joe traveled to Europe and earned international recognition under the handles “Rime” and “Jersey Joe.” Returning to the United States, Joe began to produce work for gallery shows, simultaneously pursuing graffiti and fine art.

Among his recognitions, Joe initiated a pivotal project for the graffiti movement: The Exchange, an interchange of work among top-notch graffiti artists, presented progressive ways of understanding individual lettering styles. The Exchange later developed into a four-city tour, and is followed by a second project called Revamp the 90’s.

Joe relocated to Los Angeles in late 2005, and found work teaching graffiti art to inner-city kids at Los Angeles public schools. Within the next year, Joe joined MSK (a Los Angeles based graffiti crew) and a collective of artists known as The Seventh Letter. Joe also received a spray paint sponsorship from MTN Colors.

Beyond graffiti and fine art, Joe has accepted offers to create apparel and sneaker designs, advertisements, set designs, film commercials and perform live painting for promotional campaigns and time-lapse films.

To date, Joe has painted 20 cities within the United States and 22 cities in 13 countries internationally. Aside from being featured in numerous books, magazines, and videos, many of Joe’s works are still exhibited in original form for public viewing. Joe currently resides in Los Angeles where he actively paints, creates fine art and works on a variety of design-based projects.

Same old, Same old news…

By Sirum One, June 30, 2010 2:28 pm

There is always two sides to every story…

Yeah, ok the police are worried that the idea of  a graffiti competition

could potentially spark an outbreak of unnecessary vandalism and that the competition

winners may consider using their prize paint for illegal graffiti ? Unlikely as who ever will be good

enough to win such a prize will most likely be highly professional and I can only imagine will continue

using the prize paint in only the most professional manner.

Yet obviously the related authorities have become so nervous by this competition that they

have decided to make an issue of it on the channel 10 news. The reality is that what the authorities

perceive as “mindless vandalism” is going to continue whether Ironlaks competition goes ahead or not?

Largely due to the well known fact that our government does absolutely nothing to help minimise

the impact of unwanted graffiti through turning their backs on the art form all together…

How many kids through to adults paint graffiti here in Australia alone??  Has anyone thought

about this?  There must be thousands… Graffiti, Aerosol art, Vandalism, Street Art – whatever the title.

What is it really? Its a culture and more so.. A culture about art.  And what our ignorant Government

should be doing is embracing it the same way many South American and European countries have to

to this very day by taking the positives from within the movement and creating  street art festivals,

permanent murals and legal zones that eventually generates tourism as people like to be cultured.

It all adds to the intimacy of a city or town by giving it a personality.

This could be done by organising in each council precinct its own legal space for artists to paint

on, much the same as skate parks. Also workshops where kids are taught properly by professionals how

to use related tools of the trade and how put them to proper creative use. Or how to seek out their own

legal space whether it be in the public or gallery.

I have talked at countless council town meetings over the years regarding this topic and at the end of

the session everyone cheers and agrees yet still nothing is ever done.

These are small steps our government could take to help curb the momentum of unwanted graffiti

on our streets. No its not going to solve their problem, and it never will as the tagging  is also

a large part of movement. BUT these simple ideas would have a far more significant impact then

sweeping the topic back under the mat as they do time and time again.

At the end of the day > Ironlaks idea to hold such a large scale graffiti event is nothing more then a

celebration of the art form itself. And a big chance for the hundreds or thousands of patrons of the

art to push themselves and come up with the most amazing graffiti works they can do at that point

in time. That’s NOT promoting illegal graffiti… It is simply embracing the talent and asking for the

very best of what we do to be put out their for not only ourselves but the wider community to enjoy

and admire.

Ironlak are taking the initiative by asking for the very best from us…

Something the Government should have thought about doing along time ago.
