THE LOW-DOWN….
Roughly a week and a half ago I received a last minute phone call to try and gain my involvement in
working on the set of an Indian movie being filmed here in Australia. I decided to look into the
opportunity and got myself in contact with the head casting agent from Sydney who then went onto
explain to me that an artist was required for a couple of days painting graffiti related images in the
background of some of the scenes that where to be shot here in Melbourne’s alleyways…
ABOUT THE MOVIE :-
The movie is called ORANGE. It is about a blossoming romance between two young Indian adults
growing up here in Australia. ( I’m pretty sure its set in Sydney .. ) Sounds pleasant yeah ? Well
wait for it!! The lead actor gets himself involved in the graffiti scene and quickly learns that there
is a price that comes with rocking mad styles through ( Melbourne’s ) backstreets.. And soon gets
caught up in a bitter feud with a rival gang of extremely territorial graffiti writers ! LOL ; )
Now that’s more like it !! It wouldn’t be a Bollywood movie with out some good old ass
kicking scenes now could it… But in fact to be politically correct, this is actually a Tollywood
film. Of equal importance to the Indian people, the difference being only the dialect
of Indian being spoken in this movie. Telugu is spoken by over 70 million people through
out India and the movie itself once released is expected to be viewed by more then
300 million people ( no joke ).
This will be the writer/lead director of this movie’s third successor. Bhaskar Natrajan previous
films have been so successful that the anticipation to be an instant hit with this film is above
and beyond.
The lead actor in this movie is the 24 year old Ram Charan Teja the next big star of Indian film.

His father Chiranjeevi is one of the greatest Bollywood actor/producers of the last 20 years
and is considered the Clint Eastwood of the Indian Film industry ! With this being said, its
understandable that these guys brought a 10 million dollar budget with them to film here in Australia alone !
( show me that cheddar ! )
The youtube clip you are about to witness is a remake of The Michael Jackson clip – Thriller
directed by the legendary Chiranjeevi himself… – ENJOY !
OK PEOPLE -
This just gets better… I arrive at the tailor unit base location opposite Melbourne’s courts
on Elizabeth street at 9 am. I am asked to sign in and head straight to the wardrobe van to
get into costume. What?
I am told that I am to change into some sort of gang-banger outfit as I may appear in the backdrop
of some of the scenes… Within moments I have four Indian men hurriedly trying to undress me
and match me up to what they thought wall suitable gang related attire… Now as non of them could
speak proper English, It took several moments before they registered that I wasn’t comfortable with
being undressed by the four of them. They tried their best to get me into a skin tight muscle top that
was so damn tight it was a struggle to remove, as I then told them they didn’t have a hope in hell of me wearing
such a garment…
I was then given a white t-shirt with a picture of Mick Jagger on it. “Yes , I can deal with this !” I thought
And gave them the thumbs up that it would do. All of the sudden they get out the scissors and start
cutting the shirt at the bottom above my waistline?? Hm mm… Once they were happy they had make me look
as gang-like as humanly possible? They covered me with chains and sent me off to the set.
Note the pants :-

YEP – THEY’RE JEANS BUILT INTO JEANS !
SO – As I arrive on set, I am quickly hurried over to a group of people and asked if im in the gang?
I figured I must have been so I went along with it all… and in minutes I was being directed to
pretend I was painting with a bunch of actors in an allyway?
Within all the confusion one of the directors finally realized that I in fact wasn’t an actor but was the
graffiti artist hired to create the throw-ups/tagging ect, that the actors in the gang would pretend to paint.
So I would be told something like :- ” put some colour on the wall there and make it look nice.”
I would be given no more then a couple of minutes to paint an image of sorts then to be told
its finished even if I hadn’t fully outlined it yet? Everything had to be done in an instant so I quickly
realized throw-ups, splashes of colour and tags was the way to go!
I would then be asked to move out of scene and they would film the next shot with someone pretending to
paint what ever I had just done. This procedure happened a number of times until I turned to the director and
explained that it may bring a little more authenticity to his film if I was to just paint my own design and be the one
in shot instead of getting a stand in??
Now to this day I am still not sure if that was one of the cleverest or silliest ideas I have ever come up with?
Light bulbs suddenly appeared in the directors eyes and in an instant I had tape measures coming from
cameras to my face, laser sightings monitoring my height for whatever reasons..? More cameras being set up
and a makeup artist making sure my chains where dangling in the correct fashion.
This was to be the beginning of my unexpected acting career , lol !
All of the sudden I had gone from backdrop artist working on the set , to rival graffiti gang member painting
and acting my way throughout the chase and fight scenes that were to be filmed over the next seven days straight.
These scenes inclusive of myself following the lead actress down dodgy Melbourne alleyways…
Cornering her… creeping her out, through to action painting scenes and very well choreographed fight
sequences in which stuntmen were being thrown through the air on cranes through to professional
martial artists flipping from bins. In the middle of all this was me. Usually in the background waiting to get involved
or having the Christ kicked out of me… ( at one point by a pair of nun chuck shoes tied together ! )
This seven day fight scene took me through many Melbourne locations such as ACDC lane , Hosier lane,
Fed Square and wait for it…
NEWPORT RAILWAY YARDS !!!

Throughout the entire movie our beloved Ironlak takes center stage! Whether its background props
through to being pegged at someones head?! ( It happens ) Spraying someones face or simply helping
me out with the painting… Ironlak was my sidekick all the way. Check out the stuntlak above !!

THE YARD…
Newport railway yard had given the green light to the production team to film a number of scenes from
the movie in and around some of their buildings and train carriages. In fact they asked for permission to
organize a number of carriages to be “graffed up” for the set in some of the fighting scenes. Ironically the call to
use the yard as the stage for the following scenes came less then 24 hours after some shifty kids had broken into
Newport and painted the side of one of the old Hitachi’s that had recently been done up and was about to roll out
for service. The Orange production team told Newport rail this would be perfect for the set, and thus this
leads me to the introduction of the ever beautiful - M80 Hitachi carriage

This carriage, a part of a set of two is the only Hitachi carriage left in Victoria with the original wooden workmans
platform at the very front top left hand side of the train. This was used once upon a time to gain easy access to the
front conductor to be worked on safely. This carriage in fact still had some of the original met stickers on its inside
and according to on of the rail workers hasn’t been in service since 1993.
Due to the breaks on the majority of Melbourne’s new shit-house Siemens trains failing all to often… Our government
is digging deep to try and locate and restore as many Hitachi carriages they can possibly find to bring back into service.
You know… I forgot how comfortable they were ; )

Old - SICK WCA stainer’s still irremovable to this very day…

Brand new XTRAPS – inclusive of Metro gray and blue logo sticker designs.

This is an electric locomotive. So rare in fact its one of only three in the entire world.
Newport rail has been in negotiations with the Victorian government for years now about trying
to bring the three Locomotives back into service. Due to them being powered by electricity,
they are perfectly suitable to run freight lines through out Victoria. The Government insists
that they are just to old to come back into service? Even though it will save them thousands
of dollars in fuel. To much red tape…

This is one of two Hitachi carriages that was remodeled to look like an old New York car for the set
of the movie – The Knowing, Filmed here in Melbourne a year or so ago staring Nicholas Cage.
I asked why they were being kept? And the kind people at Newport explained that they had been bought
privately for Twelve thousand each and are to be renovated and turned into the top of apartment buildings
at a location somewhere here in Melbourne! Keep your eyes UP people…

Newport historical workshops.
If you like Railway history? Go on a tour through this place… Awesome!

~THAT CARRIAGE M80 ~
And finally – the grand ending to my Tollywood saga , and what better way to finish of the most random week
I can think of in quite some time… Then to be asked with outright permission to paint not only the inside?
But outside of my new favorite carriage – THE Mfuckin80, BANG – BANG !!!
Funny int it… what money can buy you?

THE END !
